Orca whales are a prominent feature in my artistic practice. I’m drawn to whales and expressions of sea life because they are brilliant, emotional creatures that reflect elements of our human experience. Their magnificent bodies move so freely and powerfully in the water; I can’t help but want to capture their magic with my brush strokes.
“Lost Connection” is a tribute to Luna, the lost whale in Nootka Sound that sadly died young. During Luna’s short life, the whale was separated from his mother and left on his own to travel the Pacific Northwest waters. Luna was alone and isolated from any connection to his family. The people of Nootka Sound struggled with the right thing to do for Luna; give him friendship and connection or shun him and leave him alone.
The waters are turbulent and rough, an example of his life and those who were part of it; the constant battle of needing friendship and not getting it, and offering friendship while risking a criminal charge. This struggle is what surrounded Luna’s six short years of life. L-pod is “swimming” through the Aurora Borealis in the sky, inviting him to join them. Luna called out to his family every day; here, he is finally heading home. The mountains represent the maze of islands that kept Luna from finding his family, the obstacles that kept him alone.
